From Not by Might, Nor by Power: Morning Manna video series with Pastor Winston Taylor - July 6, 2018
Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves - male and female; no one was to hold their fellow Hebrews in bondage.
Today's bread comes to us as God is angry again with the children of Israel. This time He is angry with them because they broke their covenant with Him that they would let their slaves go free.
The way slavery worked then was that if someone owed another person money and could not pay it, they sold themselves into slavery.
So God says, Fine, you're not going to set them free now, well after six (6) years you must set them free. They agreed, but they didn't do it, and God got mad.
Here is the bread today: God wants you and me to be free.
Friend of mine, you and I are enslaved to mental illnesses; you and I are enslaved to our jobs; you and I are enslaved to our capitalistic society. You and I are enslaved to many different things in life, and God wants to set us free.
I'm reminded of another text: Who the Son sets free is free indeed. John 8:36
Here's yet another text: I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly. John 10:10
That's why Jesus died for you - so that you can be free.
You see, there is a freedom where you're free to go wherever you want. But there's another freedom where your mind is at peace, where your mind is at rest, where your mind is joyful. That's what God wants to give you today.
Ask Him for it.
Have you ever found yourself in the midst of trying times and wondered, "Where is God?"
You waited until you were in the midst.
You forgot about Him before the stress and in the beginning of the stress when you thought you could handle it yourself.
Do you get it? You're asking the wrong question. The question isn't, "Where is God?" The question is, "Where are you?"
You left Him and then when you felt overwhelmed you wondered where He was. The answer can be found in Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Where is He? Wherever you are. Your job is to "Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always." Psalm 105:4
God never went anywhere. There's no such need - He's everywhere! You walked away from Him - maybe you didn't even notice that you had, but you did.
He makes it so easy though to restore the relationship and be reunited. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9 This is pretty awesome. We humans tend not to handle neglect and abandonment, or even just being ignored well. But God loves us so much that His aim is always to have a strong relationship with us.
To that end, He doesn't just tell you what to do, He tells you exactly what His response will be. You are guaranteed forgiveness and restoration - "If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored." Job 22:23a
What are you waiting for?
